Canadian Grand Prix: Disappointment for Hamilton as Vettel takes lead

"I'm the opposite of confident", said Mercedes executive director Toto Wolff, whose team failed to deliver with an engine upgrade in time for the weekend and also botched its tire strategy heading in practice.

"Some of the marshals were already celebrating", he said.

It was left to Bottas to chase Vettel, who made a clean getaway from the start, with Verstappen nearly passing the Finn before the order settled down. Max Verstappen was third and the other Red Bull vehicle, driven by Daniel Ricciardo, was fourth. Vettel's lone pit stop on the 38th of 70 laps saw him emerge with a six-second lead.

"I think Ferrari have had a slightly better package all round, they've been doing a slightly better job so we've got to do more".

But Vettel passed the Briton for a one-point lead in drivers standings. "I was a lot happier with the vehicle and I think we can carry that into the race".

Very little in the way of overtaking in Montreal, with the safety vehicle limiting opportunities at the start and the truncated number of laps limiting them at the end.

But in an impassioned response to complaints about the lack of overtaking during the grand prix, Vettel said the occasional uneventful race in F1 was as inevitable as an uneventful contest in every other sporting sphere. Force India's Esteban Ocon finished ninth, while Sauber's Charles Leclerc completed yet another solid race to finish in 10th, his third points finish of the season.

The New Zealander appeared to be squeezed into the barriers as Stroll, with a puncture, moved sideways ahead of him at Turn Five and the Toro Rosso was lifted off the ground before both flew off the track.

While Vettel made a clean getaway from the start, with Verstappen nearly passing Bottas, there was chaos behind when Williams' Canadian Lance Stroll squeezed Toro Rosso's Brendon Hartley into the wall. Hartley went to hospital for precautionary tests but the team said he was OK.

Drivers are only allowed three power units a season before grid penalties start coming into effect and Hamilton took issue with the rules back in the paddock.

"Yesterday the vehicle balance was great into Turn Ten", he continued, "and usually the last sector is my strongest at this track, but I was just struggling with massive bumps into Turn Ten. I corrected, but I didn't have enough room, and we collided along the wall". It was his second Canadian GP win after 2013, when he drove for Red Bull Renault. "And for Scuderia Ferrari this track and this country means a lot, as this is the place where Gilles Villeneuve came from".

It was the 300th F1 race for two-time champion Fernando Alonso of McLaren, good for fourth all-time.
