Instead of taking it easy post-surgery however, the Queen carried on with her demanding schedule and didn't cancel a single engagement.

"I can confirm that the queen successfully underwent a short, planned procedure to treat a cataract last month", a palace spokesman said, declining to give further details.

Britain's Queen Elizabeth, attends the opening of "The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries" at Westminster Abbey in London, June 8, 2018.

Her real birthday is on April 21.

The Queen Mother had an operation to remove a cataract from her left eye when she was 95 in 1995, but after her surgery she spent a night in King Edward VII hospital, unlike her daughter. The spokesperson noted that "she recently has been wearing sunglasses to events, rather than cancel them".

During cataract surgery the lens is replaced with an artificial once.

Her outpatient surgery, which was not announced at the time of the procedure, took place at the private King Edward VII's Hospital in central London, where Philip had his hip surgery.

Cataracts are cloudy patches on the eye's lens which can cause blurred vision and eventually blindness.

Patients usually go home the same day, and it can take four to six weeks to recover.

Despite her age, the queen is known for her robust health and still carries out hundreds of engagements every year.

Next week, Queen Elizabeth will travel by royal train to Cheshire, accompanied by Meghan Markle.
