McGregor Confirms He Was Set For UFC 224 Card

"I would have surpassed Ronaldo and Messi in second place" Conor McGregor
In a report by Ariel Helwani, McGregor would have had the spot now taken by Colby Covington, as he and Rafael dos Anjos would have fought for the interim welterweight title. Colby Covington, aka the new Chael Sonnen better be ready to back up his trash talk when he steps in to the cage with Rafael Dos Anjos. He was on a roll, more importantly to the UFC promotional machine, he was willing to say anything to get noticed. Playing the proverbial heel, Colby Covington has tried his hand at smack talk somewhat styled after Conor McGregor but not almost as witty.
Here are some of the craziest things that Covington has said throughout the years. Even failed attempts are a success, as long as they tie dos Anjos up and frustrate his offense.
Covington's pressure continued in Round 3. Covington's pace looked to have slowed since the opening barrage.
Covington kept coming at dos Anjos, never giving him a chance to set anything up. If there was any surprise, it was the fast start of Covington.
Covington managed to make it back to his feet but did so with dos Anjos still gripping his waist and landing punishing with knees from the clinch, although he managed to weather the storm and secure a takedown of his own right before the buzzer. He stayed on dos Anjos every second of the round. Covington shrugged it off and pressed forward.
Aware that he was down on the scorecards, dos Anjos started the fourth round with a renewed sense of objective, landing a big left hand before taking Covington down.
But it has been Covington's unrelenting social media onslaught and incendiary post-fight performances that have ratcheted up the anticipation surrounding this fight. He pressured dos Anjos and put him into the fence; dos Anjos escaped but Covington was quick to press him back into the cage again. Dos Anjos did land some pretty nice shots with that strategy, but in the end, he just didn't do enough to sway the judges' scorecards. After they broke apart, Covington landed a groin kick that brought a pause to the action. dos Anjos recovered quickly and the action resumed.
Colby Covington ran right up to dos Anjos in Round 4, but RDA cracked him in the face. It would go to the championship rounds, with RDA arguably down three rounds.
Finally, the match seemed to turn in dos Anjos' favor.
