As part of the United Kingdom government's plan to curb childhood and adult obesity in the country, PHE announced a challenge for the food industry to reduce the calories in their products by 20 percent by 2024.

KFC hopes that their meat-free creation "offers the great taste of KFC to new and existing customers who are changing their dining habits". And it will introduce meals that are under 600 calories by 2020.

KFC says that it was test chickenlike "vegetarian options" in Britain with its signature blend of herbs and spices.

The company said that after perfecting the recipe, it aims to test it with customers "and if all goes well, we hope to launch a new vegetarian option in 2019".

Meanwhile, KFC's US team has indicated to Foodbeast that the vegetarian option won't be introduced in the country and there are "no plans related to the U.K.'s test at this time".

"The development of the recipe is still in its very early stages and so the options we're exploring in our kitchen are still top secret", a spokesperson said.

Victoria Robertson, a nutritionist, and head of food innovation of KFC UK and Ireland explained that KFC recognized how people are becoming more passionate about healthy eating habits.

In the US market, KFC has no plans for meatless chicken offerings "at this time", however food industry experts say vegetarianism is on the rise and the restaurant industry is looking to meet changing demand.

KFC knows it must get this right, or feathers will fly. "That's why we're looking into vegetarian options". Colonel, we salute you.

Orlando-based global restaurant consultant Aaron Allen predicts large restaurant companies increasingly unveil more vegetarian options, like KFC's. "Double and triple digits", he said. "Chains will take note of that and change their menu offerings".
