The death toll from Guatemala's Fuego volcano rose to at least 99 on Wednesday, with many people still missing, after two strong explosions that scattered ash over a wide area and displaced thousands of residents from their homes.
Only 28 have been identified so far, it said.
The JDC said that it had "activated its emergency response network to contact both the Guatemalan Jewish community and other NGO partners to assess immediate needs and implement a response following the eruption of the volcano, which killed more than 70 people with almost 200 people still missing. The soil is unstable", said Pablo Castillo, a spokesman for national police.
Volcanic ash blankets homes and trees near the Volcan de Fuego, or Volcano of Fire, where rescue workers gather in the El Rodeo hamlet of Escuintla, Guatemala. 192 more people are still missing.
She explained there is a great need for clothing and mattresses because shelters are not equipped with them and she urged people to pray for Guatemala and its people.
Entire families have died from the avalanche of lava, mud and burning ash that were deviated from the gullies to the slopes of the volcano on Sunday afternoon. "But here, since the people have nothing to offer him, he leaves this part as a burial ground", said William Chavez, a 29-year-old accounting student. But there have been reports of bodies recovered throughout the day Wednesday.
Officials are crossing-checking census data with aerial photos of homes, registers of people in shelters and lists of the missing and injured, Cabanas said.
President Jimmy Morales has been criticised on social media for passively waiting to react to offers of worldwide aid.
In previous disasters wherein authorities decided there was no probability of discovering survivors and additional efforts to get better our bodies can be too troublesome, areas have been declared burial websites, the ultimate resting place of the victims.
