Trump calls Trudeau ’indignant’ ahead of G7 summit

Trump expanded the tariffs on steel and aluminum to the United Kingdom, Canada and the European Union on May 31 after extending exemptions in March.

Mr Trump also took to Twitter on Friday, responding to the Canadian and French leaders. At this point it's hard to justify adding Russian Federation to the G-7 when we aren't adding an ally like South Korea, not to mention China, India or Brazil, since they all have larger and more globally significant economies than Russian Federation does.

Rep. Eliot Engel, the Democratic ranking member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, said Trump's invitation to Russian Federation fits into a broader pattern of the president cozying up to President Vladimir Putin.

Moscow was expelled from the rich nations club, which sees itself as a guarantor of rules-based order and the global economy, over its annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region.

Macron said he will huddle with the leaders of Britain, Germany and Italy to forge a common approach on how to handle Donald Trump at the Group of Seven summit in Canada.

All-out trade war: Merkel told German lawmakers Wednesday before setting off for Canada that there would be "no compromise for its own sake" and that dropping the statement "may be the more honest way". Trudeau meets with Trump late Friday.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is hosting the world's most powerful countries at the two-day summit in La Malbaie, in Quebec's Charlevoix region.

This is weak. [Valdimir] Putin is not our friend and he is not the President's buddy.

Three decades after the end of the Cold War, the G7 nations are split over trade, climate and multilateral engagements such as the Iran nuclear deal.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov earlier told TASS that the Foreign Ministry was making comprehensive preparations for a meeting between the Russian and USA presidents.

Trump will arrive Friday at the annual gathering, held this year at a Quebec resort, but will leave Saturday morning before the event is over, heading to Singapore for his highly anticipated summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. "The six countries of the G7 without the United States, are a bigger market taken together than the American market".

"We have massive trade deficits with nearly every country". We will straighten that out. And I'll tell you what, it's what I do.

The comments come amid growing concern about trade disputes between the United States and its partners in North America and in Europe.

Trump joined the leaders of major industrialized nations in an idyllic Canadian resort town after days of escalating conflict over new USA tariffs he slapped on imports of steel and aluminum.

A senior European Union official briefing reporters on the pre-summit negotiations used discreet understatement to describe the impasse, but only ended up underscoring the width of the rift. In New York, the Dow dipped in early trade.

Trump appeared to have taken notice and pushed back: "Please tell Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron that they are charging the US massive tariffs and create non-monetary barriers", Trump said in a tweet.

The meeting with Trudeau could be particularly frosty, given Trump's recent sharp criticism of Canada's trade policies and the anger in Ottawa over Washington's decision to justify its new tariffs on national security grounds.
