Meghan Markle rebels in first public royal outing as a duchess

09 June 2018, 10:16 | Myron Mathis

Prince Philip, who turns 97-years-old tomorrow, was absent from today's proceedings but was no doubt watching his son take up the reigns from home.

Prince Andrew mounted a horse for the first time at this year's Trooping the Colour.

The boisterous birthday parade has been the official commemoration of a British sovereign's birthday since 1748.

The Queen's actual birthday is April 21.

The ceremony involves more than 1,400 officers, 400 musicians and 200 horses.

The entire royal family gathered together on the balcony to watch the iconic fly-past by the Royal Air Force. Meghan gets to see how the family's expert at royal duty comports herself for the myriad unexpected details-how to handle a deluge of floral bouquets, chatting with local officials, how to pace meeting bystanders at a walkabout so as to not upset the overall schedule.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle also joined other senior royals at the event. Since then, the couple du jour have jetted off to a top-secret honeymoon destination (Psst, it was reportedly in Ireland).

Sarah, Duchess of York has said that she is "very proud" of the Duke of York following his debut at Trooping the Colour as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards.

As the aerobatic display team, the Red Arrows, released plumes of red, white and blue smoke over the balcony of Buckingham Palace, the Queen's great-grandchildren waved wildly. Prince Harry is relegated to a spot in a carriage because he is not a royal colonel.

Meghan, Harry and the other members of the royal family took their place in Wellington's former office which overlooks the parade ground. The two chose to forgo a honeymoon after the wedding so that they could dive right in to their duties as members of the royal family.
