KITTY HAWK ELECTRIC The battery-powered car has 10 propellers

Flying car backed by Google co-founder Larry Page

Kitty Hawk, the flying vehicle company founded by Google's Larry Page has a new personal auto model coming to a sky near you.

Kitty Hawk's other model, the Cora, is a two-seat vehicle designed as alternative transportation in cities.

Kitty Hawk, the mysterious flying-car startup funded by the Google cofounder Larry Page, unwrapped a huge update on Wednesday - and it's promising to get people in the air in under an hour.

The electric aircraft is capable of vertical take-off and landing like a helicopter.

Piloting Kitty Hawk is as easy as playing the video game Minecraft, chief executive Sebastian Thrun said in published reports.

Kitty Hawk wants to get Flyer out to customers soon and it is apparently taking pre-orders, without announcing the prices publicly.

"Making Flyer accessible, which is what we do at our Lake Las Vegas training facility, helps more people experience the freedom and possibilities of vehicles of the future", a Kitty Hawk spokeswoman told AFP. However, the company states that the Flyer is only to be used over water and uncongested areas, so don't imagine you'll be using one to skip the traffic in your daily commute just yet.

Test flights by first-timers were over water, with the top speed limited to 32 kilometers per hour (20 mph) and the altitude to no more than three meters.

The start-up teased the Flyer in a demo video a year ago, and is now nearing public roll out.

"Flyer is created to be easy to fly and flown for recreational purposes over water and uncongested areas", the website said.

The uncovered cockpit appears to be big enough for one person. The company said it's the first step in making flying "part of everyday life".

This latest model by Kitty Hawk has been designed, built, and tested by a team led by 2013 Sikorsky prize victor and Guinness world record holder Todd Reichert.
