The launch of SES-10 in March 2017 was a big milestone for SpaceX, which has been working toward reusable rockets for 15 years before successfully launching a recovered first-stage rocket.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is ready to liftoff early Monday morning from Cape Canaveral carrying the SES 12 satellite.

The rocket's first stage booster has flown before, back in September when it launched the U.S. Air Force's top-secret military space plane, the X-37B.

SES was the first company to fly a spacecraft on a used Falcon 9 rocket booster.

Monday's launch attempt will try to send the 5.4-ton SES-12 communications satellite to a high transfer orbit.

The launch was originally scheduled for early Wednesday morning, and then postponed again to early Friday. Operating under such heavy reuse is the breakthrough expected to slash the cost of spaceflight, helping more lofty space exploration goals to be financially feasible, SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk has said.

SpaceX's next launch is a cargo resupply mission to the International Space Station, set for the end of the month. The satellite will provide data and video services to millions of people throughout the Asia-Pacific region, said representatives of SES, the Luxembourg-based company that will operate the spacecraft.
