Alberto is likely to make landfall Monday between New Orleans and Destin Florida before moving into Mississippi and Alabama by Tuesday

Along with heavy rains and high winds come rough seas and a threat of rip currents from Florida to Louisiana that can sweep swimmers out to sea.

In case you were wondering subtropical storm Alberto.it will make landfall across the Western Panhandle of Florida or Southern Alabama Memorial Day with tropical storm force winds and 6 to 12"+ of rain".

Areas from Crystal River to Navarre could experience 2 feet to 4 feet of storm surge that will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters from the shoreline.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey declared a state of emergency for 40 counties that will be impacted most by Alberto.

"Heavy rainfall will lead to a significant risk of flash flooding across the Florida Panhandle, much of Alabama, and western Georgia through tonight, spreading northward into northern Georgia, the western Carolinas, and Tennessee on Tuesday", the NHC said.

Rain falls on Clearwater Beach by Pier 60 early Sunday morning May 27, as northbound Subtropical Storm Alberto looms in the gulf to the southwest.

The gloomy weather that put a damper on outdoor activities over the Memorial Day weekend is expected to last several more days in SC as Tropical Storm Alberto moves from the Gulf of Mexico toward the Midwest.

Florida, Alabama and MS declared states of emergency on Saturday with up to 15 inches (38 cm) of rain forecast over the Memorial Day weekend, as well as tidal surges and damaging winds, according to Patrick Burke of the weather service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

Florida, Alabama and MS launched emergency preparations on Saturday.

The area had barely recovered from a devastating flood about two years ago that killed two people and damaged dozens of buildings.

At 11 p.m. EDT Saturday, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Alberto was about 400 miles (645 kilometers) south of Apalachicola, Florida, and moving north-northeast at 13 mph (20 kph).

Bay County emergency management officials held a news briefing Sunday, and said that due to tides and when the storm is expected to hit, any surge isn't a major concern.

"I strongly encourage everyone to be safe and stay informed", Mayor LaToya Cantrell said in a statement.

Alberto - the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season - has formed in the Caribbean and is churning towards the US Gulf Coast. Storms and showers will return during the afternoon and evening carrying over into Tuesday.

The storm spun up days before the formal June 1 start of the hurricane season.

There also is a potential for storms and rain throughout the rest of the week, Corless said.
