Sleeping in on weekends could save your life

Study Sleeping in on the weekend can add years to your life
By Ladders News
Weekends are my saving grace - I wake up at 4 a.m. during the week, and I have zero qualms about sleeping until 10 on the weekends (or as late as my children allow).
The study followed the sleep habits of 43,880 subjects over the course of 13 years.
Those involved with the data say when people who get less sleep during the week slept in on weekends, their mortality rate was the same as those who get seven-hours per night. "This suggests that short weekday sleep may be compensated for during the weekend".
Torbjörn Åkerstedt, a professor and director of the Stress Research Institute at Stockholm University told CNN he was quite surprised by the findings on sleep during off days.
But people who managed less than five hours each day for a week, then around six to seven hours at the weekend were no more likely to die than those who consistently slept six to seven hours a day over the same period.
The study wasn't ideal and had limitations, including study subjects not being observed directly and self-reporting their sleep habits. There is also no risk of early death.
Sleep is something you need to replenish regularly if you don't want to hurt your health. Whether that's going to bed at 8 on a Friday night, sleeping in till 11 on a Saturday morning, or snoozing in the subway on your way to meet friends, do it. Grab that sleep by the horns and don't let go - you may just live longer for it.
"It's like with your diet".
He thinks a lot of people may relate to sleeping less during the week and, at the very least, may want to have an excuse for sleeping in on their days off. "Perhaps it's giving them hope that this habit is in some way good for them".
