Preseason Alberto: First named storm arrives early

Preseason Alberto: First named storm arrives early

If the storm becomes a rotating system with 39 miles per hour winds, it would take on the name Alberto and be the first of the 10 to 16 named storms predicted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration this year.

"The latest. Thursday runs of our top intensity models. predicted [the storm] could get considerably stronger than previously thought, with peak winds ranging from 40 mph.to 80 mph", writes Jeff Masters of the Weather Underground.

Surf swells are expected are expected across the western areas of Cuba and the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

The storm is expected to become more organized as it moves north into the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday and Sunday.

NHC rainfall maps predict a heavy concentration of rain in Florida and the south of Georgia, Alabama and MS as well as coastal parts of Louisiana. It starts out mostly cloudy, expect a few rounds of potentially heavy rain to push through.

This tropical system will likely remain weak, but it will bring in a lot of deep, tropical moisture from the Gulf into the Southeast. A ridge of high pressure will build in from the southwest, producing the hottest weather of the year so far.

"There is a chance that Alberto could be a hurricane before it makes landfall", said Andrew Kennedy, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Jacksonville.

A storm system will be approaching the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday. The tropical storm watch lies from Indian Pass, Florida to Grand Isle, Louisiana.

Subtropical storms also have maximum winds far from the center, rather than clustered tightly around the center like a tropical storm.

"The flood risk is not expected to end with Memorial Day". This will likely begin Sunday afternoon and last through Tuesday, something the 4 Warn Storm Team will continue to watch.

Depending on the exact track and strength, while it's not expected to become a hurricane, we could see tropical storm force winds in spots, minor storm surge and even some severe thunderstorms.

The city's annual Memorial Day observance at the Veterans Memorial Wall is also scheduled rain or shine.
