Pope Francis met with a survivor of sexual abuse, Juan Carlos Cruz, back in April and the two talked about his sexuality, and the abuse he endured at the hands of a Chilean priest, for three days.
While the Catholic church still believes homosexuality is a sin, the Pope's remarks may further bolster that his holiness is more tolerant than those who have preceded him. Pope Francis extended his apologies, which was of big importance to Cruz, who had been discredited for years.
"Juan Carlos, I don't care about you being gay", the pope reportedly said. According to Cruz, the pope told him that God made him gay and loves him like that, and that he shouldn't worry about what anyone else says.
"When we forget this, it becomes a masculine Church; without this dimension, it sadly becomes a Church of old bachelors, who live in this isolation, incapable of love, incapable of fruitfulness", the pope said.
Francis uttered his "Who am I to judge?" comment during his first airborne press conference in 2013, signaling a new era of acceptance and welcome for gays in the church.
But his latest remark, if accurate, would mark an historic shift in attitudes towards homosexuality within the Catholic church.
Moreover, in regards to Cruz's outing Chile's largest clerical abuse case, the aftermath included all Chilean bishops offering their resignation to the Pop after the three-day emergency summit last Friday (May 18).
Francis has already said the church must study whether it's possible to ordain married men of proven faith, so-called "viri probati", to minister in remote communities facing priest shortages. "But that they are called to a life of chastity". John, symbolizes all of us, the Church, Dodd said. 'I don't want my abuser to end up living in a plush retirement home'.
Fernando Karadima, the man who abused Cruz, was found guilty of abuse by the Vatican in 2011.
In his homily, Pope Francis said that in the Gospel, Mary is always described as "the Mother of Jesus", instead of "the Lady" or "the widow of Joseph": her motherliness is emphasized throughout the Gospels, beginning with the Annunciation.
Victims accused Bishop Juan Barros of having witnessed the abuse but doing nothing to stop it. Barros, who was one of those who offered to stand down, has denied the allegations.
Mr Cruz spoke of his happiness after receiving a personal apology from Pope Francis for the abuse that he suffered.
