Syria's Assad Meets With Russia's Putin In Sochi

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have hailed achievements in what they called the fight against terrorists in Syria. The UN has hosted several rounds of peace talks in Geneva that have made no progress toward ending the conflict.

The situation in Syria is now favorable for the political process, Russia's president said late Thursday.

"As regards economic cooperation, we'd like to point out a recent increase of Russian investment, the investments the Russian companies are making in various sectors of Syrian economy", Assad said. It said that Russian Federation welcomes and supports this decision based on agreements reached in national dialogue meetings in Sochi.

The two leaders discussed the ongoing clashes in Syria between pro-Assad forces and civilian rebels.

Russian Federation launched an air campaign on behalf of President Bashar Assad in 2015, helping to turn the tide of the war in his favor.

Assad previously visited Russian Federation and met Mr Putin in November 2017 and October 2015. Russia's entrance came at a time when almost half the country had been absorbed by the Islamic State militant group (ISIS), which targeted both the Syrian government and rival rebel forces.

"Of course, after this military success additional conditions have been created to restart a full-format political process", he said at talks with Assad. "Now, we can make next moves jointly with you". A brutal government crackdown and the rise of an armed insurgency eventually tipped the country into civil war.
