Apple sells just 600000 HomePods in the first quarter

Amazon Echo Plus smart speaker

Both Amazon and Google dominate despite their speakers not bring available in the Chinese market.

At its annual developer conference last week, Google had said that the Assistant, rolled out just three years back, can now be accessed on 500 million devices across 30 languages in 80 countries. All the other smart speakers hovering around combined to be responsible for the remaining 1.3m shipments.

According to David Mercer, Vice President at Strategy Analytics, "Further strong growth in smart speaker sales confirms our view that this new market is far more than just a flash in the pan". Amazon had a 43.6 percent market share, down from 81.8 percent in Q1 2017. Market leader Amazon is estimated to have shipped an impressive 4 million smart speakers during the quarter though its global market share has almost halved from the same period a year ago.

Amazon shipped a whopping 4 million smart speakers during the first quarter of 2018, but rising competition from the likes of Google and Apple has cut its global smart speaker share almost in half when compared with the same period past year, according to Strategy Analytics.

Amazon, of course, was the first mover in this market with its Alexa-driven speakers sold aggressively through its own dominant retail channel.

David Watkins, the Director at Strategy Analytics highlighted that Amazon and Google accounted for almost 70% of global smart speaker shipments in Q1 2018, although their combined share has fallen from 84% in Q4 2017 and 94% in the year ago quarter. Google is second with 2.4 million sales (26.5 percent share), while Alibaba sits in third having sold 700,000 speakers, giving it 7.6 percent of the market. Apple's showing was enough to put the company in fourth place ahead of Xiaomi, which shipped 200,000 units and captured 2.4 percent share. Meanwhile, the newer kids on the block of Alibaba, Apple, and Xiaomi achieved 0.7m, 0.6m, and 0.2m shipments respectively.

This means Apple has a long way to go in catching up with Amazon and Google.

It should be noted that the HomePod was not sold until February 9, so Apple was not a full quarter.
