The internet is having a meltdown

It's because the audio clip has two different sounding words at different frequencies.

He played it for his peers, who disagreed over whether the syllables formed "Yanny" or "Laurel".

Cloe Feldman, a vlogger from the United States, had no idea the havoc she would create when she posted a short clip to her social media platforms this week.

Some linguists at the University of Alberta gathered to dissect and try to come to an agreement on what's being called an audio "illusion".

If you run it through a High Pass Filter, and isolate Yanny, so that your brain knows what to look for, then it becomes hard to unhear and you start to hear both of them at the same time, so there is perhaps some mental perception involved as well.

"When you have signals that are weak, that are near threshold, then even minor changes like equalization or quality of the headphones could make a difference", linguist Terry Nearey said.

In perhaps the most vexing element of the debate, the majority of listeners hear beyond doubt one of the two words, with few waffling between the two.

Did you think it was Yanny or Laurel??

"The video is recorded in real life with sound coming out of my speakers".

Roland Szabo, 18, said he recorded the seemingly innocuous audio from a vocabulary website while doing a project for his school in the USA state of Georgia. An expert says your answer could depend on your level of hearing loss.
