The United States Surgeon General said on Wednesday that he assisted in a medical emergency on board a Delta flight

It was not immediately clear what happened during the medical emergency. Adams responded and the patient eventually regained consciousness, but Adams determined the passenger needed to go to a local hospital and the plane returned to the gate. "Medical assistance was provided by the U.S. Surgeon General who worked with our flight crew to aid the customer", Delta confirmed in a statement.

However, Adams said that it was a part of his duty and he was glad to assist the passenger.

The surgeon general and two nurses escorted the patient off the plane and into the care of medics waiting at the gate.

Flight staff called for help, and Adams, along with two nurses, stepped in to help evaluate the passenger.

As per the information from the surgeon general's office, Dr. Jerome Adams was aboard the 1827 Delta flight from Atlanta to Jackson on Wednesday evening when a passenger lost consciousness on the tarmac, before the departure of the flight from the airport. There is no word on what exactly caused the patient to lose consciousness or how he or she is now doing, but in Adams' tweet, he stated that the patient is doing well.

This former Indiana State Health Commissioner was in the right place and the right time.

Shortly after Dr. Adams posted the selfie, in which it appears he is still on board the plane, Delta replied - thanking him for volunteering, for his service, and for sharing the news.

The #USPHS to which he referred is the United States Public Health Services Commissioned Corps.
