Rafael Nadal showed no signs of fatigue as he dismissed Damir Dzumhur 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the third round of the on-going Rome Open Tennis Championship.

The second seed eased past Berrettini 7-5, 6-2 to join former winners Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in the third round at the Foro Italico as Austrian Dominic Thiem fell at the first hurdle.

The Spaniard has to win in Rome in order to get the number 1 ranking back from Roger Federer after the Swissman managed to get on top of the charts following Nadal's loss in Madrid.

Djokovic was up against Georgia's Nikoloz Basilashvili and settled down after a nervy start to wrap up a 6-4, 6-2 victory after one hour and 18 minutes.

"After a loss in Madrid, it's important to come back strong".

The 21-year-old from Hamburg next meets Britain's Kyle Edmund, who beat Djokovic in the Madrid second round, and got past Lucas Pouille 6-2, 7-6 (7/3) in Rome on Wednesday.

France's Caroline Garcia, a semi-finalist in Madrid last week, also eased into the third round past Hungary's Timea Babos 6-3, 6-4.Garcia, the seventh seed, went through with a break in both sets in 1hr 30min and she will next play either American Sloane Stephens or Kaia Kanepi of Estonia.In the men's event, United States eighth seed John Isner fell following a three set battle which included three tiebreaks against Spain's Albert Ramos 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (7/5).

In the decider, a single break of serve in the seventh game gave Fognini the opportunity and he held to his two serves to win 6/3.Kei Nishikori denied Grigor Dimitrov a 27th birthday win to reach the Internazionali BNL d'Italia third round on Wednesday, defeating the World No. 4 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-4.

Halep needs to reach at least the quarterfinals or risk losing the top spot to Caroline Wozniacki.
