European Parliament's closed-door hearing with Zuckerberg criticized

Cambridge Analytica shared data with Russia: whistleblower

Bannon Tried To Use Cambridge Analytica Ads To Suppress Black Vote

Tajani said: "Our citizens deserve a full and detailed explanation".

"I will not attend the meeting with Mr Zuckerberg if it's held behind closed doors", Verhofstadt tweeted.

But the decision to hold the meeting with the European Parliament behind closed doors has angered others.

Mark Zuckerberg has accepted an invitation to appear before the European Parliament in a closed-door session over the Cambridge Analytica scandal surrounding his firm, despite yet again refusing to be questioned by MPs in the UK.

Zuckerberg's already gone before the US Congress.

The Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament will meet on May 22 with Zuckerberg to discuss the use of personal data of Facebook users, after which Tajani will inform media of the discussions.

Justice Commissioner Věra Jourová was admonished by Tajani when she said it was a pity the hearing would not be public.

The meeting comes ahead of the enforcement of new European data protection regulations coming into force on May 25th.

He said the appearance could be as early as next week, and would be "a step in the right direction to restore trust".

On Monday, Zuckerberg will also attend a meeting organized by French President Emmanuel Macron aimed at pressuring tech giants to use their global influence for public good. While Nix has testified once to the committee, lawmakers want him to give further evidence - a request he had previously declined.

Zuckerberg's European Union visit will be his first since a whistleblower alleged that Cambridge Analytica improperly harvested information from over 50 million Facebook accounts to help Donald Trump win the 2016 presidential election. Collins warned Zuckerberg last month that if he does not come voluntarily, he could be issued a formal summons, which would force him to appear before the parliament when he next enters the United Kingdom.

Cambridge Analytica said it pitched to Leave.EU, a Brexit campaign group, but did not do any work for them after it missed out on the official campaign designation to Vote Leave, which is separately being investigated for possibly breaches of campaign finance rules.
