Prof. Ronit Endevelt, head of the Health Ministry's nutrition department, told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday that most food companies here have replaced artificial trans fats with safer alternatives, such as unsaturated fatty acids fats, rather than hydrogenated oils that become solid when exposed to a hydrogen gas.

Dr Ravi Shankar, senior gastroenterologist, said, "Trans fats are mainly found in fast foods and if they are consumed in higher quantities, they lead to premature death and accumulation of fats in one's blood vessels which can even lead to cerebral palsy".
There are also naturally occurring trans fats in some meats and dairy products.
"Trans fats are a harmful compound that can be removed easily without major cost and without any impact on the quality of the foods", Branca said. In partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Gates Foundation-funded health organization Resolve to Save Lives, the WHO proposed an initiative to get rid of all "industrially-produced sources" of trans fats.
In the US, the first trans fatty food to hit the market was Crisco shortening, which went on sale in 1911. Manufacturers use them as they have a longer shelf life than other fats.
Trans fats increase the levels of LDL-cholesterol, a well-accepted biomarker for cardiovascular disease risk, and decreases levels of HDL-cholesterol, which carry away cholesterol from arteries and transport it to the liver, that secretes it into the bile. They propose that banning the substance from all foods will be a major step in reducing preventable deaths.
A number of high income countries have already moved to restrict or ban trans-fats.
