Twitter to start hiding comments from suspected 'trolls' in conversations

The move is part of Twitter's attempts to improve what it describes as the health of public conversation on its platform.

While not saying whether there are key phrases or words that indicate comments to be hidden, Twitter has said it will use "signals" such as an account-holder having multiple accounts or not having verified their account via email.

Twitter is making some new changes that calls on how the collective Twitterverse is responding to tweets to influence how often people see them.

"By using new tools to address this conduct from a behavioural perspective, we're able to improve the health of the conversation and everyone's experience on Twitter, without waiting for people who use Twitter to report potential issues to us". "Some troll-like behaviour is fun, good and humorous".

Twitter announced today that it revised its strategy for fighting abusive internet "trolls" that involves the use of behavioral signals to identify harassers on the social network and then limit the visibility of their tweets.

"Some of these accounts and Tweets violate our policies, and, in those cases, we take action on them", he continued.

According to Twitter, early tests of this newfangled system have already shown four percent fewer abuse reports from search and eight percent fewer abuse reports from conversations across the globe.

Harvey and Gasca said that there are many new signals that Twitter is taking in, most of which are not visible externally. You'll have to click the "show more Tweets" button to see them. "Others don't but are behaving in ways that distort the conversation". Twitter will look for signals such as unconfirmed email addresses, multiple accounts opened by the same user, and repeated interactions with accounts that don't follow them.

For Twitter, this means utilizing an amalgamation of code-based rules, human reviews, and machine learning-which will all help organize and present content to the user in a purportedly healthier way, in areas such as search and conversation.

Twitter says that while many posts do not break its rules, many are still be in poor taste or offensive to a large number of users. However, some believe it has not gone far enough and still has work to do. This technology and our team will learn over time and will make mistakes. Our goal is to learn fast and make our processes and tools smarter.
