IMD issues fresh thunderstorm warning, says may hit north India within three days

More thunderstorms headed North India's way

Days after a thunderstorm and dust storms hit Delhi-NCR, a powerful dust storm accompanied with rain and squall hit Delhi-NCR on Wednesday morning.

Areas of Jind, Rohtak, Panipat, Alwar, Bagpat, Meerut and Aligarh may witness light rain with thunderstorm early on Wednesday, the weather department had said earlier.

India's meteorological department Wednesday issued a fresh warning of thunderstorm accompanied by gusty winds in the national capital and its outskirts. Strong winds, accompanied by dust, lashed Delhi-NCR while lower the temperature.


At least one person was killed and 13 injured in the dust storm that hit the national capital in the early hours of Wednesday. On Tuesday, the IMD had forecasted that the wind speeds could reach approximately 74 km per hour.

Earlier on Tuesday, India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted severe weather conditions in several parts of Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. "The frequency of western disturbance is unusually high", said Mahesh Pahlawat, vice-president (Meteorology and Climate Change) at Skymet, reported The Indian Express. At least 100 people died in north India and some other states, owing to thunderstorms.

The latest devastation comes almost two weeks after dust and thunderstorm claimed 134 lives injured 400 people in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttarakhand and Punjab on May 2.

Storm uprooted trees, knocked down power poles, grounded flights and disrupted trains across northern, eastern and southern states, including the capital, New Delhi, on Sunday evening.
