Ninth Round Of Syria Peace Talks Under Way In Astana
During the Monday meeting, the participants explored the draft statement of the Ninth Round of Astana Talks on Syria Crisis.
According to sources that attended the meeting but wished to remain anonymous due to media restrictions said the main items on the agenda were de-escalation zones, violations to the cease-fire and the situation of those forced to migrate to northern Syria after being evacuated from East Ghouta and Homs. At the Ankara summit, the leaders of the three guarantor states reached an agreement to hold the next summit in Tehran.
The Astana peace process has helped significantly reduce the violence in Syria through the formation of four de-escalation zones in the country, setting the stage for Syria's warring sides to focus on negotiations on the political future of their homeland.
They also reaffirmed their resolve to keep fighting the Takfiri terror groups operating in Syria, especially Daesh and al-Qaeda-affiliated militants.
The three countries also agreed to hold later two meetings of the working group; one in Ankara next June on the release of the kidnapped and the detainees as well as searching for the missing persons and the other is scheduled to be a high-level global meeting on Syria in July in the Russian city of Sochi.
They revealed an agreement to hold consultations with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistura and the Syrian parties to "prepare the suitable conditions to launch the constitutional committee in Geneva, as soon as possible".
Zhainaqov added that the United States was not taking part in the talks.
