Sure, the vast majority of audiences all over the world have yet to see Solo: A Star Wars Story, but Lucasfilm is already betting big on Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy might have confirmed the subject of the next Star Wars spin-off movie at the Cannes Film Festival this week. Lucasfilm chalked it up to a misunderstanding between Kennedy and the reporter.

"We would love to tell a story about Lando Calrissian one day, but it's not relevant, it would be fun to tell the story of Han and Chewie ...", Kennedy said, translation via Entertainment Weekly.

Excitement for the film is growing, and United Kingdom fans will get to see Solo: A Star Wars Story a day earlier than everyone else, with it set to hit cinemas on 24 May. Sources close to Lucasfilm tell IndieWire that there are no concrete plans for a Lando standalone film at this time but that the studio is eyeing numerous options for the future. While Solo: A Star Wars Story has to set up the origin of a character fans know so well, Lando is a character who still has a lot left to define in his life.

The next "Star Wars" film is slated to be 2019′s "Episode IX". From the context of the interview, it seems Kathleen Kennedy is implying that it follows Solo: A Star Wars Story within the chronology of the Star Wars canon. Even Premiere and ComicBook both note the long-gestating chatter around an Obi-Wan film.

Right now, Donald Glover is absolutely on fire and he's being singled out as the best thing about Solo.

LucasFilm have always been rumoured to be planning sequels for Solo, but it presumably depends on how the movie fares at the box office when it opens later this month.
