Jerusalem embassy opening: White House blames Hamas for death of Palestinian protesters

Palestinians rallied in Gaza on Tuesday for the funerals of scores of people killed by Israeli troops a day earlier, while on the Gaza-Israel border, Israeli forces took up positions to deal with the expected final day of a Palestinian protest campaign.

On the 70th anniversary of Israel's independence, a day of celebration was marked by a day of angry protests.

Palestinians are calling for the "right of return" to territory now claimed by Israel. More than 2400 had been wounded in the bloodiest day in the enclave since the 2014 war with Israel, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

The EFF has welcomed the government's decision to recall the South African ambassador from Israel, following the death of at least 58 Palestinians killed by the Israeli Defence Force [IDF].

"It is truly an honor to be here in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, for the transfer of the United States Embassy from Tel Aviv", Lee said in a statement.

"They are undoubtedly responsible for, and accomplices to, the unjust bloodletting in occupied Palestine as well as the sufferings and hardships", he went on to say.

Today, Palestinians mark the "Nakba", or catastrophe, commemorating the more than 700,000 Palestinians who fled or were expelled from their homes in the 1948 war surrounding Israel's creation.

Monday's clashes occurred as U.S. and Israeli officials celebrated the opening of the new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem.

Israeli soldiers have used tear gas and live fire to push back waves of demonstrators and have been widely accused of using disproportionate force.

"Every country has an obligation to defend its borders", he wrote on Twitter. "We will continue to act with determination to protect our sovereignty and citizens", he said. "The responsibility for these tragic deaths rests squarely with Hamas", said White House spokesman Raj Shah.

"The Security Council expresses its outrage and sorrow at the killing of Palestinian civilians exercising their right to peaceful protest", read a draft of the statement, a copy of which was seen by AFP.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was "profoundly alarmed and concerned by the sharp escalation of violence" and the number of dead.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said while on a visit to London: "Israel is wreaking state terror".

France's President Emmanuel Macron condemned violence by the Israeli military.

"AU calls for renewed and genuine global efforts to find a just and lasting solution to the conflict, based on the existence of two States, Israel and Palestine, within the framework of the relevant United Nations pronouncement", the statement from AU commission concluded.

"Oh, come on, Canada has to condemn Israel for this massacre, this flagrant abuse of human rights.

Hamas and those leading the demonstrations in Gaza must ensure that they remain strictly non-violent and must not exploit them for other means", said E.U. High Representative and Vce-President Federica Mogherini.
