Hidden Pages in Anne Frank's Diary Deciphered After 75 Years

Scholars restore pages on sexuality that Anne Frank erased from diary
Now, officials from the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam haveannounced the discovery of two previously unknown pages of her diary-material that reveals an earthier side of its teenage author. "The Anne Frank House on Tuesday revealed that it had managed to read the pages, which a then 13-year-old Anne wrote on September 28, 1942, and subsequently covered over with brown masking paper, keeping the pages" contents a tantalizing mystery for decades.
Now, through digital technology, researchers from the Anne Frank House museum and two other Dutch organizations have found that Frank hid four "dirty" jokes about sex and her perspective on sexual development, contraception, sex and prostitution.
"Anyone who reads the passages that have now been discovered will be unable to suppress a smile", said Frank van Vree, director of the Netherlands Institute for War Holocaust and Genocide Studies.
But it also said that the pages "do not alter our image of Anne".
"These - literally - uncovered texts bring the inquisitive and in many respects precocious teenager back into the foreground".
Cooped up in an attic for months on end, Anne Frank jotted down some of her observations about life in her diary.
About prostitution, Anne wrote: "All men, if they are normal, go with women, women like that accost them on the street and then they go together". "The "dirty" jokes are classics among growing children".
"She starts with an imaginary person whom she is telling about sex, so she creates a kind of literary environment to write about a subject she's maybe not comfortable with", he said.
It is not known why she covered up the two pages with brown paper, but several times in her diaries she voices fears that others might pry into her writings. "They make it clear that Anne, with all her gifts, was above all also an ordinary girl". For two years, the Franks and another family lived in a secret room of an office building.
"Over the decades Anne has grown to become the worldwide symbol of the Holocaust, and Anne the girl has increasingly faded into the background", it said in a statement. Though Anne herself edited her diary with an eye to publication, the book-released eight years after her death from typhus in theBergen-Belsen concentration camp at age 15-contained additional cuts.
