Jerusalem’s Old City walls glow with Guatemala flags ahead of embassy launch
Guatemalan President, Jimmy Morales and Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu attended the embassy opening in an office complex in west Jerusalem.
Palestine on Wednesday recalled its ambassadors to four European states after diplomats from those states reportedly took part in celebrations marking the relocation of the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Netanyahu noted that Guatemala was the second country behind the United States to recognize Israel's independence after the partition vote in the United Nations.
The Jordanian government also denounced Guatemala for moving its embassy to Jerusalem.
The European Union opposed the USA move of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Turkey has expressed outrage over the killing by Israeli forces on Monday of 60 Palestinians during protests and clashes on the Gaza border and also blamed tensions on the USA decision to move its embassy for Israel to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.
The embassy move was accompanied by mass protests and clashes along the Gaza border that saw Israeli forces kill some 60 Palestinians.
On Monday, in the presence of a US delegation, including US President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, a brand new US embassy was inaugurated at Jerusalem's Arnona area.
The opening of the USA embassy in Jerusalem on Monday triggered deadly clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli security forces in Gaza and the West Bank.
Palestinian leaders said by relocating the embassy the United States had created incitement and instability in the region and abrogated its role as a peace mediator. It was the bloodiest day in the Hamas-run enclave since a 2014 war with Israel.
