Google investigated over massive data collection that could be costing consumers 'millions'

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is investigating claims that Google harvests private data from Android users.

The Oracle experts say phone owners' data ends up being consumed even if Google Maps is not in use or aeroplane mode is switched on.

They believe users might also be unaware that with Bluetooth turned on, location data (including movement) is gathered from beacons, where these are in use.

Now, considering more than 10 million Australians use Android phones, 1 GB data cost of 10 million Aussies translates to $445 million to $580 million a year.

The Australian investigation is linked to allegations made in an Oracle report about the impact of Google and Facebook on the advertising market. Some users complained about the display looking boring, so Google added a new color mode. It is based on a recent report that claimed the American tech giant Google harvests large amounts of data from Android devices. The software company also claims that the search giant gets detailed information on people's searches and surfing from the Android devices. Google notes, "With Location History off, the places you go are no longer stored". With it, the phone can determine how you're using apps (and not using apps), then properly manage battery life according to the actual stats.

The Android P also has parental control feature so that the users can control the usage of their phones by children - controlling what, when, and where their children use smartphones. Any restrictions on the types of data Google can collect or the way in which that data can be utilized could be consequential to its business.

The chairman of the ACCC, Rod Sims, has confirmed that Oracle representatives have briefed the regulator on the subject. Google attempted to address this by giving users more options to adjust the display of their phones, but it seems that they aren't quite done yet.

Google still hasn't implemented the search bar directly into the launcher like we've seen in previous leaks, but there's a mod for this version of the Pixel launcher if you really want to get ahead of the game. A technology consulting firm has recently reported that Google is "preparing a petition for a rehearing en banc (a full-court review) of Oracle's recent appellate victory".
