Bear suspected in attack killed in Colorado

St Mary's Medical Center surgeon Charles Breaux center talks on Monday sharing that Kimberly Cyr five is in good condition and received 77 stitches on her back side

A five-year-old girl was attacked by a bear, bitten and dragged before the girl's mother scared off the animal. The mom found a large black bear dragging the girl, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

The attack happened about 2:30 a.m on Sunday, when the child went outside to check on a noise she thought her dog had made. The bear eventually dropped the girl after the mother began screaming at it. Officers killed the bear before it entered the trap.

"She came out ... she yelled at the animal", said CPW spokesman Mike Porras.

"[The girl] has been the calmest person in the room all day long", said pediatric surgeon Dr. Charles Breaux of St. Mary's Medical Center.

An autopsy has been conducted on the 127-pound two-year-old male bear that attacked Kimberly Cyr outside of her East Orchard Mesa home early Sunday morning

Colorado Parks and Wildlife says officers are tracking the bear with the help of federal wildlife officers. The father described the girl's wounds, saying she had been bitten on her buttocks and leg, and said that she was not bleeding severely from the wounds at the time of the call. They said in their statement that a heavy law enforcement presence will be seen throughout the area as they search for the bear.

"The necropsy, along with DNA results will provide the confirmation, but we are confident we have the right bear", said Area Wildlife Manager Kirk Oldham.

The 125lb and approximately two-year-old male bear suspected in the attack was shot by wildlife officers on Sunday night as it was walking up to a home about half a mile away from where the girl was attacked.

Officials have urged local residents to make sure bins are secure, keep pet food inside and immediately report any further sightings of bears.
