19 dead, 39 infected in Congo Ebola outbreak: WHO

EBOLA OUTBREAK 19 deaths confirmed 39 suspected cases reported in DRC WHO says

The experimental vaccine has been shown to be highly effective against Ebola.

Tedros said he hoped for a better result in this ninth Ebola outbreak in the vast central African country since 1976, when the deadly viral disease was first identified by a Belgian-led team. It also urged the Minister of Interior, Lt. -Gen.

Forty-two cases of the Ebola virus has been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the present outbreak, according to the country's Ministry of Public Health.

"Such aloofness by the government is directly responsible for the escalation of killings and bloodletting in Benue, Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kogi, Zamfara, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna states and others parts of the country, where marauders and insurgents are pillaging our citizens as if overlooking the plight of Nigerians has become a state policy". "Because of the possibility of such a crisis, we must urge an immediate intervention in this long-lasting industrial action so that we can have the workers, God forbid, to attend to whatever health problem may arise in our Republic". And we know that health care workers can really be an amplification factor for these kinds of outbreaks.

The prayer was unanimously granted by the senators. With varying symptoms ranging from fever to diarrhoea, there were a total of 869 contacts and 20 laboratory confirmed cases were recorded.

Doctor Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, on a two-visit to DRC, said the suspected new case was in Bikoro, at the centre of the latest Ebola outbreak in the country's northwest, where 18 people have died so far.

The head of the World Health Organization said on Sunday there had been another reported case of Ebola in the DRC and that an experimental vaccine to fight the disease was expected to become available in the country this week.

"The Senate is further reminded that DRC is 445 kilometres by air from Abuja, is easily accessible via a flight from Lagos that takes less than three hours".

"The Ebola vaccine is an additional tool in our response to the outbreak".
