Cycling: George Bennett moves up after drama on stage 10 of Giro d'Italia
But Yates's Colombian team-mate Esteban Chaves had a disastrous day as he was distanced on the opening climb of the 244km stage from Penne to Gualdo Tadino and lost more than 25min to drop out of overall contention having started the day second at 32sec.
Yates now leads by 41 seconds from defending champion Dutchman Tom Dumoulin.
A mere five kilometres into the stage, the peloton had to tackle a 15.7 kilometre climb, and Chaves was immediately dropped, suffering heavily after the rest day.
Marco Frapporti (Androni - Sidermec - Bottecchia) provided the day's supporting entertainment with a 80km solo break, extending his lead in the breakaway competition.
Surely Froome and the Team Sky hierarchy have now got a bit of thinking to do about whether they continue chasing a lost cause, or cut their losses and pull out with an eye on the more familiar ground of the Tour de France in July. I m not scared of the third week; I m scared of the time trial.
With Quick-Step Floors' star sprinter and overall points leader Elia Viviani, dropped along with Chaves, the race split into two as several teams in the peloton worked together to distance them.
A series of attacks began late in the day and, as the tension increased, Tom Dumoulin was caught in a small crash before chasing back on.
As the attacks petered out, Mohoric stayed clear alongside AG2R La Mondiale's Nico Denz and had enough to hold him off at the line, winning some 34 seconds ahead of the main bunch, led by sprinter Sam Bennett (BORA-hansgrohe).
Before the sprint, Mohoric glanced over his shoulder to check on Denz but the German never passed him and Mohoric won in slightly more than six hours.
"After that, I remained close to [team-mate] Domenico Pozzovivo until I asked him if I could ride behind Villela since I felt very good".
"I'm delighted that I have taken this opportunity". You saw with Esteban Chaves losing time on stage 10 how quickly this race can change so I'm going to keep plugging away.
"I wasn t convinced I d win the sprint against Nico Denz. I'm not very good in a sprint from a slow speed so I launched and I increased my speed as much as I could". I'm super happy for myself but, foremost, for my team Bahrain-Merida.
Wednesday's stage 11 will be another lumpy one, covering 156km and three categorised climbs between Assisi and Osimo.

Watch a Tesla Model X tow a passenger airplane down a runway
As you can probably imagine, the airplane weighs much more than the Model X and exceeds its towing capacity by quite a margin. Cars are a common mode of transportation and the idea of these four-wheeled vehicles towing airplanes isn't new to the world.
