Kia Sportage diesel hybrid to launch this year

The new Sportage is likely to get exterior styling tweaks to move it on from the current model

The new EcoDynamics+ powertrain will make its debut in the Sportage SUV during the second half of 2018, before being introduced to the Ceed small family auto in 2019.

Kia Motors will introduce its first 48V diesel mild-hybrid powertrain in the second half of 2018.

The 48V mild-hybrid powertrain is the first new technology to be launched as part of Kia's wider powertrain electrification strategy. On most vehicles the battery will be located under the boot floor minimising any space penalty.

The system also allows a moving stop-start function, enabling the diesel engine to switch off automatically during in-gear deceleration and braking.

Kia is introducing EcoDynamics+ 48V mild-hybrid diesel engines to their United Kingdom range later this year in a bid to reduce emissions. It means the engine can switch off earlier and for longer, even while the vehicle is moving, and lean on a 13bhp power boost from the motor while accelerating, both of which reduce fuel consumption. The latter is connected to the diesel engine's crankshaft by a belt, and under acceleration, it provides up to 10kW (14PS / 13hp) of extra power.

The mild hybrid will be affiliated with both manual and automatic transmissions and will work as described on all types of transmissions: front, rear and all-wheel drive.

Christened 'EcoDynamics+', the new mild-hybrid powertrain is paired with a 0.46 kWh 48-volt lithium-ion battery and uses a new mild-hybrid starter-generator (MHSG) unit.

The first auto that will receive this technology, are the Kia Sportage, which will be launched this year. It can also be adapted for FWD, RWD and AWD drivetrain layouts. Kia plans to launch 16 advanced powertrain vehicles by 2025, including five new hybrids, five plug-in hybrids, five battery-electric vehicles and-in 2020-a new fuel-cell electric vehicle.
