Assam opposition leader seeks Special Assembly session on Assam Accord

"Have faith in the state government and the chief minister as he will ensure that no harm is caused to the interests of the people", he told reporters here.

"It's enough. We the people of the Northeast have suffered a lot in the hand of the central government".

The situation prevailing in the state over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 has made it imperative for the House to pass without delay a pending private member's resolution in question, which was moved by Congress member Abdul Khaleque, Saikia said.

"We have already taken the burden of many illegal citizens in the region and no more we want that. We have requested the JPC to visit Assam and interact with the people again", said the senior Cabinet minister of the BJP-led government in Assam.

With the credibility of the title of "jatiya nayak" fast eroding amid his government's continued silence on the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday said he would have no moral authority to hold on to power if he could not protect the interests of the people.

Meanwhile, the Asom Gana Parishad, an ally of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the state, said it would pull out of the coalition if the bill was passed, The Hindu reported.

A memorandum highlighting stiff opposition against the Bill was also submitted to Joint Committee on Citizenship (Amend- ment) Bill 2016 Chairman Rajendra Agarwal.

The objective of the JPC to meet various stakeholders was to obtain feedback from the migrants, if any, belonging to religious minority communities of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh i.e Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians residing in the State of Meghalaya and other stakeholders in connection with the examination of "The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016".

Mr Sonowal said there are allegations against him that he was not allowing the parliamentary committee to visit Assam.

The new bill breaches the clauses of Assam Accord which stated that all illegal foreigners who came to the state after 1971 from Bangladesh, irrespective of their religion, have to be deported.

The JPC had heard individuals, political and other organisations on the bill in Guwahati on May 7 for 30 Brahmaputra valley districts and the next two days for the three Barak valley districts.

While the hearing was in progress, Khasi Students Union activists staged a lightning protest in the premises of the venue, and raised banners and placards to register their protest against the bill.

"This time, people have been given top priority", he said.

Slamming the Congress for showing double standard, Patowary said while Congress leaders in Guwahati are opposing the bill, its leaders in Bengali-dominated Barak Valley are supporting it.

In the meeting, many NGOs including United Front of former members of the ULFA, KSU, FKJGP, HYC, HNYF, the Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya and others strongly opposed the Bill and urged the government not to introduce the Bill in the Parliament.
