Letter carriers to pick up donated food this Saturday

Volunteers are needed Saturday for the largest food drive in Dane County. Plastic bags to fill with donations will be provided again this year by the post office.

On May 12 help "Stamp Out Hunger" by participating in the Letter Carriers' Food Drive. "If you leave food, it's going to get picked up and we'll get it".

In 2017, Postal Service carriers collected over 75 million pounds of food nationally, feeding an estimated 30 million people.

"Over its first quarter-century, the food drive has only grown in importance and in impact", NALC President Fredric Rolando said.

Making a donation is easy.

"All of the food collected stays in the local communities", Blackledge said. With the economic struggles many Americans face, this food drive is as critical as ever. Food trucks and jumpers will be available. Letter carriers will pick up the donated items when they make their regular deliveries in the area. "During the summer, utility bills skyrocket and children, who usually receive meals at school, may not have enough to eat".

Maness said she wanted to thank Donnie Erwin-Brown of the Food Closet, Al Smith, Kay Goggans, Debbie Wood and Bo Colley for their help. All food such as this must be canned and non-perishable. The hope this year, he said, is to double that. Around this time of year, supplies are low, which is where the drive comes into the picture.
