As suggested by the AMR moniker, an acronym for Aston Martin Racing, the new model gets more than just a power boost. Deliveries in the United States start this summer.
Aston Martin has introduced the DB11 AMR, a faster, sharper and aesthetically enhanced replacement for the current V12-powered DB11.
It starts with a hopped-up version of that Mercedes-Benz-sourced, 5.2-liter, twin-turbo V12, now offering 630 horsepower.
The V8 flavor of the DB11 came next, and then the epic Vantage, which absolutely cemented, in my eye, the notion that this new Aston Martin is playing for keeps. With the AMR on sale now at a starting price of £174,955 - almost £20,000 more than the outgoing V12, and £30,000 more than a V8 - that gap has certainly been achieved.
This enables the DB11 AMR to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds (60 in 3.5 seconds) and hit a top speed of 208 miles per hour (334 km/h).
Compared to the V-8-engined variants, the DB11 AMR Signature Edition boasts a 136 hp advantage. This includes dark headlight surrounds and smoked taillamps with a darkened front grille and tailpipes, gloss black roof, exposed weave of the carbon fiber hood blades and side strakes. The AMR's Sport driving mode features recalibrated gearshifts for the eight-speed automatic gearbox and a slightly louder exhaust note, while Aston claims that the vehicle strikes "the ideal balance between excitement and refinement" thanks to its reworked suspension.
"Since its initial launch back in 2016 the DB11 range has matured rapidly and intelligently", said Aston Martin President & Chief Executive Officer Andy Palmer.
He continued: "By applying a suite of carefully considered performance and styling enhancements the DB11 AMR is both faster and more precise". A Rapide AMR is up next we are told. Meanwhile, the cabin features monotone leather and Alcantara upholstery with contrasting lime stripes on the seats, with a sport leather steering wheel coming standard. A carbon fibre engine cover, exhaust tips and a deployable spoiler are all available as exterior options as well.
Priced at £174,995, the AMR will reach customers in Q2 of 2018, with the Stirling Green and Lime livery cars asking a little more at £201,995. We like how they went with a black dash and a mix between carbon and Satin Dark Chrome trim.
To match that performance hike the chassis has been reworked to provide a greater sense of connection, handling has been sharpened, a new shift calibration has been developed and the exhaust has been tuned for a "more characterful note".
