Others were told to leave the stores.

Registers shut down with stores unable to make sales shortly after 4pm, leaving consumers with trolleys full of shopping but no way to pay.

Woolworths confirmed the outage in a social media post, saying that "an IT issue impacted registers in our supermarkets for a short period of time this afternoon".

"It was really frustrating".

"Registers are offline so customers are standing in queues with baskets of food that they can't buy", she said.

A security guard was also stationed at the closed doors to turn shoppers away. Staff were very apologetic.

By 5pm, Woolworths tweeted that all registers were back online and apologised for the outage. "We were all offered a box of chocolates".

The supermarket giant has taken to Twitter to confirm the IT issue has since been resolved.

"They've told everyone just to leave their food and leave the store".

"Good customer service would have been to let everyone now in the store have their trolley load for free. Bad form. I'll stick to Aldi".

A technical issue has forced Woolworths shops across Australia to close.
