UNSC rejects Russian resolution on Syria attack

The U.S., France and Britain launched military strikes on Saturday morning in Syria to punish Assad for an apparent chemical attack against civilians last week and to deter him from doing it again.

Assad said the strike would increase Syria's resolve to "fight and crush terrorism in every inch" of the country.

But he appeared to contradict that message when he said on Saturday that Western allies were prepared to "sustain" the military response if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad does not stop using prohibited chemical weapons.

Syrian state media accused Western powers of trying to hinder the investigation with their attack.

That same day, Democratic Rep. Jerrold Nadler (NY) revisited Trump's old tweets, in which he chastised former President Barack Obama for ordering airstrikes on Syria without congressional approval, after Trump did the exact same thing.

"President Assad's use of chemical weapons and attacks on civilians are inexcusable, inhumane, and illegal". U.S. officials said the Syrian military planes that dropped the chemicals had taken off from there. "It is shameful that the USA and France would hit Syria like this with no proof and outside worldwide legitimacy".

KHQ will continue to update this list as statements from other officials are sent into the newsroom.

- American Forces deployed B-1B Lancer bombers for last night's strike and used double the number of weapons than in a 2017 missile strike responding to the Khan Shaykhun chemical attack.

"When our president draws a red line, our president enforces the red line", Haley stressed.

She wrote: "Syria's use of chemical weapons is sickening but the question the PM has not answered is how this action, taken without parliamentary approval, will halt their use or bring long-term peace". Thus, this attack looks much more like it was meant only to degrade Syrian chemical weapons themselves.

Most of the weapons rained down on the Barzah Research and Development Center, the "heart" of the chemical weapon program, located in the greater Damascus area. Urging the Security Council to assume its responsibilities, Guterres said a "lack of accountability" emboldens those who would use such chemical weapons by providing them with the "reassurance of impunity".

The Pentagon also called Syria's "air defense" ineffective.

For his part, McKenzie said three facilities that "were fundamental components of the regime's chemical weapons warfare infrastructure" had been targeted. "This was not about interfering in a civil war and it was not about regime change".

The Russian military said that 103 cruise missiles were fired including Tomahawk missiles, but that Syrian air defense systems managed to intercept 71 cruise missiles.
