Previous search warrants allowed NY federal prosecutors to search multiple email accounts, the filing said.

He filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles federal court last month, accusing the Gulf nation of Qatar of stealing and leaking emails to reporters in retribution for Broidy's attempts to influence the Trump administration in favor of regional rivals of Qatar.

On Friday, McClatchy reported Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller had evidence Cohen visited Prague during the last presidential campaign and met with a prominent ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Trump interventions came as federal prosecutors in NY confirmed Cohen "is being investigated for criminal conduct that largely centers on his personal business dealings".

Following the hearing Friday, the judge ordered the parties to return to court Monday for another hearing, where Cohen will have to be present.

"We think we deserve to know some of the findings from this ongoing investigation", said Todd Harrison, an attorney for Cohen. "He is the president of the United States", she emphasized at one point.

"This is of most concern to him", said Hendon. In the end, his exposure raised more questions than it answered, and made Zuck and the company a more publicly visible concern. "And anyone who has ever hired a lawyer a close third". The U.S. Attorney's office has noted that that process has been used in the past in criminal cases against lawyers.

"The issues here are straightforward", he said.

"Attorney Client privilege is now a thing of the past".

In Friday night's filing, Blakely and Harder argue that "where there are overlapping issues in criminal and civil cases, a stay "is appropriate to preserve [an individual's] Fifth Amendment Rights" - quoting from a federal court ruling from NY.

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan are investigating whether any crimes were committed as part of an effort by Cohen to squelch damaging stories about Trump when Trump was a presidential candidate, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Donald Trump's long-time lawyer Michael Cohen.

The FBI raids on Cohen's home, office and hotel room in NY on Monday are part of a criminal investigation that overlaps Daniels' suit to void the contract that bars her from talking publicly about what she says was a 2006 sexual encounter with Trump, the lawyers argued in court papers.

Prosecutors said the move is meant to ensure no documents are improperly used or breach client confidentiality. Romanians were among the hackers present, it says, and the discussion touched on using Bulgaria as a location where they could "lie low".

Hendon asked for a delay in court proceedings until at least Monday, saying she needed to research the law.

Michael Avenatti, a lawyer for Stormy Daniels, told Reuters on Thursday that Cohen's attorney told him that Cohen will plead the Fifth if his application for a stay is denied.

Also present in the courtroom on Monday was Michael Avenatti, the lawyer for Stormy Daniels, the adult-film actress who received money from Cohen and who has alleged that she had an affair with Trump.

Cohen finds himself at the intersection of two related lines of investigation, one into the Trump campaign's suspected coordination with Russian Federation, and the other into Trump allies' alleged payoffs to people who claimed knowledge of Trump's infidelities.
