The Russian and US ambassadors to the UN Vassily Nebenzia and Nikki Haley at the Security Council meeting in New York
Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, said Sunday that a new round of sanctions will target Russian companies that aid Syria's chemical weapons capabilities.
Russian Federation on Saturday called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council as Moscow said it would consider supplying S-300 missile systems to Syria following US-led strikes.
Russia's foreign minister says Moscow has received a document from a Swiss lab that analyzed the samples in the nerve agent poisoning of an ex-Russian spy, which points at a Western-designed nerve agent as a likely cause.
"Again, we are being threatened". Mattis and other government officials from the national security team warned Trump that such action would create conflict with Iran and Russia [VIDEO].
A handout picture released by the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) shows Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
He said the Western strikes were launched just as Moscow was coordinating with Washington and Paris to send USA and French experts to Syria to investigate if the country used chemical weapons.
Later, a White House briefing on a call between Trump and May said that they "continued their discussion of the need for a joint response to Syria's use of chemical weapons".
In the near term, the military strike appeared to ramp up a searing war of words between Washington and Moscow, which regarded the action as a attack on Russian Federation itself. In announcing the strikes, Trump directly blamed Russian Federation for enabling the Syrian regime's use of chemical weapons.
"We had an attack on the Foreign Ministry where we have to assume that it stemmed from Russian Federation", he said.
The attack also comes just hours before experts from the UN Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) were scheduled to visit Douma on Saturday to determine whether chemical weapons had indeed been used there.
The ministry also pointed at previous use of chemicals by rebels in fighting with Syrian government troops.
Syria's air defence system, which mostly consists of systems made in the Soviet Union, has intercepted 71 of the missiles fired on Saturday by the US, British and French forces, he added.
