Cooperation issues in the areas of innovation, technology and education will head the agenda of the high official in this tour of Europe.
In his departure statement prior to his visit, Mr Modi said, he is visiting Sweden and the United Kingdom for bilateral meetings and for the India-Nordic Summit and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting during 17th to 20th of this month.
PM Modi will leave Sweden tomorrow for the United Kingdom, where he will also attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) apart from holding bilateral talks with his British counterpart Theresa May. According to figures provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the trade of India with the Nordic countries amounted to about 5, 300 million dollars in 2016-2017, with a cumulative foreign direct investment in the Southeast Asian country of 2, 500 million dollars.
PM Modi will first travel to Sweden on a two-day visit from April 16-17. Modi also launched the first phase of the ambitious Ayushman Bharat scheme here. An Ayurveda Centre of Excellence will be launched in London.
The two meetings with Modi will be seen as part of efforts by Britain to emphasise its eagerness to forge closer ties with India, amid growing scepticism and concern about Britain's ability to secure lucrative post-Brexit trade deals.
Modi will attend the CHOGM in London from April 19-20.
With an Indian diaspora of around 1.4 million, Modi's visit will attract much attention. The prime minister's royal welcome will include a special event hosted by Prince Charles, during which the heir to the British throne will drive up in a Tata Motors' first-ever electric Jaguar to symbolise the India-UK technical collaboration. PM Modi's visit to Britain this time has been themed "Living bridge and tech partnership". But even more reprehensible than such abuse of power, it is the response of the state government in hounding the victim of rape and her family instead of the alleged perpetrator that shows how perverted governance practices have become.
On the sidelines of the "unprecedented" welcome, PM Modi will also be greeted with some protests at Parliament Square on Wednesday afternoon, being spearheaded by Pakistani-origin peer, Lord Ahmed, and bringing together UK-based Kashmiri and Sikh groups.
Also to be seen is in what format Britain raises issues around the treatment of religious minorities in India, and the detention of Jagtar Singh Johal, a British citizen who remains in custody in India after being arrested previous year.
