We learned from his manager, Bill Rogin, via social media, that Ermey died from complications of pneumonia.
"It's with deep disappointment that I remorse to tell you all that R. Lee Ermey ("The Gunny") handed away this morning from problems of pneumonia", Mr Rogin tweeted.
Ermey was a former Marine Corps sergeant who also served as a drill instructor during his 11-year career with the Corps. Another role he landed around that same time also hit close to home, playing a Marine drill instructor in Sidney Furie's The Boys in Company C. During his almost 40-year career as an actor, he appeared in 60 films, often in roles related to army and some of great renown such as Texas massacre, Leaving Las Vegas, Seven, Mississippi in flames and death penalty, among or titles. He was stationed in San Diego and Okinawa during his military career, which included 14 months in country during the Vietnam War. Kubrick said at the time that 50 percent of the insulting dialogues were all Ermey's improvisation.
In a four-decade acting profession, he played with a helicopter pilot "Apocalypse Today", depicted authoritarian characters like may or Tillman in "Mississippi Burning" and did voiceovers for characters such as the green plastic soldier "Sarge" in "Toy Story".
There is a quote made famous in Full Metal Jacket.
Ermey served in the US Marines before becoming an actor. Please support your men and women in uniform.
"In the course of hiring the marine recruits, we interviewed hundreds of guys", he said. 'They didn't know what he was going to say, and we could see how they reacted. Kubrick let Ermey write his own lines and he came up with about 150 pages of insults. These include Lock N' Load with R. Lee Ermey, where he talked about the development of the different types of weapons, and the History Channel show Mail Call, in which he provided his knowledge about modern and historic military issues. Unlike his hard-edged characters, Rogin wrote, "The real R. Lee Ermey was a family man, and a kind and gentle soul".
