Jammu: A lawyer fighting for the Kathua rape and murder victim on Saturday alleged that he had been attacked by goons in Udhampur town.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday condemned the rape and gave an assurance that justice would be done. However, what happened to the eight-year-old girl in Kathua can not be seen merely through the prism of the routine brutalisation of Indian women by sexual predators or political perfidy on display under Yogi Adityanath's rule since it has a larger and darker dimension.

"....the unspeakable horror of the Kathua and the Unnao incidents shows that the government has failed in performing the most basic of the responsibilities given to it by the people", Pande quoted from the letter.

Protestors carrying banners and placards, marched the streets of Delhi, Mumbai, Thiruvananthpuram, Goa, Ahmedabad, Surat, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Moradabad and other cities, demanding that government quickly prosecute rape suspects.

The group has also demanded the convening of an all party meeting "to deliberate on ways in which the phenomenon of hate crime can be tackled socially, politically and administratively". Her body was found a week later. Postmortem report revealed that the girl was kept confined for eight to ten days, tortured and sexually assaulted.

The BAK's decision came a day after the Supreme Court took a serious note of lawyers obstructing the judicial process and initiated a case on its own accord saying such impeding of the process of law "affects the delivery of justice".

"Both the accused (Chotu Kumar and Phekan Kumar) were caught by a police patrol that heard the girl's cries for help".

In the video, which was played during a press conference at the BJP headquarters here, Mir is purportedly telling reporters that the locals believed the investigation was motivated and that the main culprits were still at large. The accused, 24-year-old Nityacharan Jena, is a neighbour.

Union Minister Maneka Gandhi on Saturday said, "My ministry will seek an amendment to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for death penalty to convicts of rape of minors below 12 years", she said.
