Apple begins free repairs for Apple Watch Series 2 with swollen batteries

16 April 2018, 04:10 | Jodi Jackson

Apple will repair Series 2 watch batteries for free

Apple will repair some Apple Watch 2 models that have swollen batteries or won't power on for free

The repairs must be scheduled through the Genius Bar and it is recommended that customers ensure that it will be a free fix prior to agreeing to service.

Apple advises that customers inquiring about a refund for a previous Apple Watch Series 2 battery replacement should contact its support advisors.

The document was obtained by MacRumors and suggests that Apple Watch Series 2 models may not power on for some reason and may experience swollen battery issues. In addition to this, the company is said to provide assistance for up to 3-years after the initial purchase of the wearable. Only 42mm-sized models are eligible for free repairs, which includes the Sport, Edition, Hermès, and Nike+ variants. The program does not, however, apply to any Series 1 or Series 3 models, nor does it apply to any 38mm models. Repairs are available to owners up to three years after their purchase date, even if they didn't purchase Apple's extended warranty. Apple has noted that all models of the Apple Watch Series 2 will be a subject to "visual-mechanic" inspection before the inspection takes place.

Apple is certainly no stranger when it comes to battery-related issues concerning its products, ranging from battery shortages impacting the company's ability to fix older MacBooks to an iPhone battery overheating and smoking in an Apple Store, forcing its evacuation. Apple has nearly always replaced or serviced such devices and generally covers expanded batteries past the 1-year warranty date, regardless of a program such as this.
