"The reason that they collect so much data from people - from surveilling people, so to speak - is because they use that data to help advertisers target those people in very, very specific, personalized ways".

Facebook is withdrawing its opposition to the California Consumer Privacy Act, the company confirmed earlier this week, with the move being welcomed by a number of privacy advocacy groups in the state.

Zuckerberg squirmed when pressed about a 2011 agreement with the Federal Trade Commission that was created to force Facebook to tighten its privacy controls.

Zuckerberg was being questioned about Cambridge Analytica, the company funded by Republican boosters that apparently breached Facebook's crack security measures and accessed the personal data of more than 50 million users, which is apparently not quite legal. "Not everybody has the same level of knowledge and understanding of how Facebook works, how digital advertising works and all these sorts of things". The social network recently started notifying users who had their information scooped up.

"I don't want to vote to have to regulate Facebook, but by God, I will", Republican Senator John Kennedy told Zuckerberg on Tuesday.

Facebook is implementing the GDPR standards for European users next month, and some of its rules will be extended to USA and other users later, he confirmed.

Did we just get to the bottom of the "does Facebook listen to your conversations" conspiracy?

"We don't sell the data".

The CEO also seemed ignorant of the term "shadow profiles", a commonly used term in technology that refers to data that Facebook collects about people who do not have Facebook profiles. Rep.

Ex-Cambridge Analytica employee, Chris Wylie, had told United Kingdom lawmakers last month that Cambridge Analytica illegally gained access to data for 50 million Facebook users.

After Zuckerberg said he didn't know, Lujan enlightened him.
