Western threats only increase regional instability - Assad

15 April 2018, 07:53 | Erica Roy

On the ground in Syria, rebels in Eastern Ghouta surrendered their heavy weapons and their leader left the enclave, signalling the end of one of the bloodiest assaults of the seven-year war and a major win for the Assad regime.

Peskov wouldn't say if Moscow could use a Russia-U.S. military hotline to avoid casualties in a case of a U.S. blow, saying only that "the hotline exists and has remained active".

Russian military police have started patrolling the site of last weekend's alleged chemical attack in Syria.

"We believe that would have an extremely destructive impact on the whole Syria settlement process". The West swiftly pointed the finger at the Syrian government, which has denied all the accusations.

President Trump warned Russian Federation on Wednesday to "get ready" for a missile attack on its Syrian ally, but tweeted Thursday that it may come "very soon or not so soon at all!"

His latest tweet, on Thursday evening, said: "Never said when an attack on Syria would take place".

"We continue to consider it extremely important to avoid any steps that could lead to more tension in Syria", Mr Peskov said.

The French president, who said he was in daily contact with President Trump, said any strikes would go after Syria's "chemical capabilities".

But a special hotline for the USA and Russian militaries to communicate about operations in Syria is active and being used by both sides, Moscow said Thursday.

The Syrian media has announced that several missiles targeted Tayfur military airbase in the countryside of the city of Homs, killing 14 members of the Syrian army and Iranian forces. "Could be very soon or not so soon at all!"

Russian Federation has threatened to respond firmly to any military action against the Syrian Government.

Velayati supported Assad's stance, adding that threats by some Western countries to attack Syria are "based on lies after the liberation of Eastern Ghouta".

Theresa May received unanimous cabinet backing for United Kingdom military action against Syrian regime targets after senior ministers were briefed by Sir Mark Sedwill, the national security adviser, on the intelligence case pointing to President Assad's culpability for the Douma attack.

The same officials say Syria has continued to produce or procure chlorine, which also has industrial and agricultural uses.

"With every victory achieved on the field, the voices of some Western states are raised and actions are intensified in an attempt by them to change the course of events. these voices and any possible action will contribute nothing but an increase in instability in the region, threatening global peace and security", Mr al Assad said according to Syrian state television.
