USA 'locked and loaded' to strike Syria again if new attack: Haley

Russian Ambassador Alexander Yakovenko arrives for a press conference at his residence in London Friday

"These three targets seemed to hit the sweet spot and do that", McKenzie said.

Two congressional representatives from Maryland reacted via Twitter to the missile attack launched by the US and its allies against Syria on Friday evening.

For years, U.S. President Donald Trump attacked Barack Obama on a variety of issues, including how much time the former president spent on the golf course and U.S. military involvement in Syria.

"Today, the nations of Britain, France, and the United States of America have marshaled their righteous power against barbarism and brutality", Trump said.

"We would have preferred an alternative path, but in this case there was none, " May told reporters in London Saturday morning.

Chlorine, in contrast, has been used more widely in Syria's conflict without past USA reprisals, and the chemical itself is far easier to find and weaponise, experts say.

Friday's military campaign targeted research facilities that are thought to have been involved in the production of chemical weapons.

Nikki Haley relayed the message from President Trump at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council hours after a US -led bombardment targeted Syrian chemical weapons faciliies.

Addressing the council, Guterres urged all countries to uphold global law and warned that "Syria today represents the most serious threat to worldwide peace and security". NY time, Agence-France Presse reported.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also called the strike "an act of aggression" against a sovereign state.

Mr. Assad's key ally Iran also slammed the attack, with supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei describing Western leaders as "criminals".

The Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, who this week ruled out his country's participation in military action in Syria, announced his unequivocal support for the targeted bombings. In Damascus, it seemed like a fairly ordinary Saturday, except for small rallies in praise of Assad that formed in traffic circles and around fountains.

In a televised statement late Friday, Trump blasted both countries for supporting Assad.

Haley scoffed at Russia's defense of Assad. "Nations of the world can be judged by the friends they keep".

The Syrian Government denies the chemical weapon attack accusation, saying the rebels and the West fabricated it as an excuse to attack the country.

Jebelli further emphasized that regional countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, were not able to engage in a direct war against Syria, but gave money to the U.S. to wage wars.

Strikes were aimed at "chemical weapons infrastructure" in what U.S. billed as a warning against Assad employing such weapons in future.

The Syrian military claimed that US, British and French aircraft and ships fired around 110 missiles but that very few had hit their targets. U.S. Air Force/Handout via REUTERS.

OPCW inspectors have raised questions about the SSRC since 2013, when Damascus joined the 1997 Chemical Weapons Convention and agreed to do away with its stockpile to avert threatened strikes under President Barack Obama.

"Canada stands with our friends in this necessary response and we condemn in strongest possible terms" the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

Reaction: Syria fired surface-to-air missiles in response to the attacks but Russian Federation apparently did not, the U.S. said, despite a threat from the country's ambassador to Lebanon that Moscow's forces would do so.

Kamran Bokhari, a senior fellow with the Center for Global Policy in Washington, said the strikes appeared meant to avoid provoking Russian Federation. Pentagon officials said the assault pummeled, but did not eliminate the Syrian program.

Mrs May said that the strikes delivered a broader message to Russian Federation about the illegal use of chemical weapons following the poisoning of a former spy in the United Kingdom, an attack blamed on Russian Federation.
