Todd further wanted to know if Ryan would trust Comey's judgment, leading the Wisconsin lawmaker to note that he really doesn't know the ex-FBI head and he didn't want to get involved in a "food fight" to help sell books.
Trump fired Comey last May and has publicly criticized him since then, but not to this extent.
Comey said he cautioned Trump against ordering an investigation into a salacious intelligence dossier alleging an 2013 encounter with prostitutes in Moscow.
"I never asked Comey for Personal Loyalty", the president asserted after a brief pause to discuss Syria.
The Republican National Committee is poised to lead the pushback effort against Comey by launching a website and supplying surrogates with talking points that question his credibility.
On Sunday, before the ABC interview aired, Comey tweeted that his book draws on stories from his life and from lessons he has learned from others. That distracted me slightly because I immediately began wondering why his wife would think there was any chance, even a small one, that he had been with prostitutes urinating on each other in Moscow'.
"It must have been", Comey responds, adding, "I don't remember consciously thinking about that, but it must have been". Those that have read the advance copies have reported that Comey includes plenty of personal attacks directed at Trump's physical attributes and Comey compares Trump to a mob-boss.
Some in the White House believe the book gives them plenty of ammunition to attack Comey from another angle: as a sympathizer of former President Barack Obama.
Trump on Sunday pushed back again against Comey's claims that Trump sought his loyalty, saying, "I hardly even knew this guy".
Comey, who Trump fired in May 2017, says in his upcoming book "A Higher Loyalty" that his decisions about restarting the federal probe into Hillary Clinton's use of private email servers while secretary of state was influenced by her likely winning the 2016 White House race over Trump and that he was concerned about making her a "legitimate candidate".
The FBI has long tried to operate as an independent law enforcement agency.
The allegation in Trump's tweets about Comey leaking classified information appears to be a reference to Comey passing along to a friend a memo about his interactions after Trump fired him.
On Sunday night, Comey's interview will prompt numerous Google searches about Comey, who served as the seventh Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from September 4, 2013, until he was sacked on May 9, 2017.
Unlike Michael Wolff's "Fire & Fury", which caught the White House unawares when it was published in January, the administration had weeks to polish its rebuttal rhetoric for Comey's book.

The 30-year old slugger has developed into an elite hitter, and he is now hitting.250 with two homers and 11 RBI's on the season. Betts limped back to the dugout and, after high-fiving several teammates, went down the steps into the clubhouse with trainers.
Cold front could bring severe weather Sunday
Look for a little sleet this morning mixing with snow at times before we see an overall change to snow in the afternoon hours. Afternoon would actually be worse because that would give the atmosphere more time to heat and create more instability.
