Time cover shows Trump in storm after Federal Bureau of Investigation raids lawyer's office

Trump's Lawyer May Have Stored 'Gold Mine' Of Recorded Conversations: Report

A judicial hearing has adjourned until 2 p.m. on efforts by President Donald Trump's personal attorney, Michael Cohen, to prevent federal investigators from using materials the FBI seized in a search of his Manhattan office, apartment and hotel room this week.

Sanders declined to comment on whether the president will fire his deputy attorney general or special counsel Robert Mueller amid mounting frustrations with both.

Prosecutors say Cohen barely practiced law so most of the documents aren't off limits.

Cohen wants Wood to let them or a "special master" review the seized materials to decide what can be turned over, without violating the right of his clients to shield communications with their lawyers.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, is aiding the FBI as investigators look into a $130,000 payment she received as part of a nondisclosure agreement from Cohen 10 years after the alleged sexual encounter, NBC News reported.

The warrants also sought business records on Cohen's dealings in the taxi industry, the person said. Trump viewed the media relationships as transactional, the source said.

But they provided new details on the investigation, which they said has been going on for months.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Tom McKay accused Cohen of trying to invoking "wildly overbroad" claims of attorney-client privilege to avoid the disclosure of thousands of allegedly privileged communications related to the president and other cases. In the weeks after, several women said publicly that Trump had subjected them to unwanted sexual advances.

"That tells us that [the FBI] believes there wasn't any less obstructive methods to obtain the information", he said.

But the legitimacy of warrants can be challenged, even after they have been issued. According to reports, the raid is the clearest sign yet that the president's longtime attorney is in serious legal jeopardy. Prosecutors would have had to convince a federal judge to conclude evidence of criminal activity could be found. Khuzami, a former head of enforcement at the Securities and Exchange Commission, only joined the U.S. Attorney's office in January after he was brought in by Berman, who himself is still waiting to see if Trump will nominate him to have the job permanently.

But Mueller did have a hand in instigating the raids. His team reportedly referred the case to the Manhattan prosecutors as a local issue. That suggests Mueller's team uncovered evidence of something criminal but tangential to their mandate of investigating Russian interference, lawyers say. On Tuesday, he tweeted that "attorney-client privilege is dead!"

Cohen is being investigated for possible bank fraud and campaign finance violations, The Washington Post reported.

Among other items seized from Cohen were tax records, business documents, and electronic devices, according to the Times, who cited a person briefed on the search. Some senators fear doing so could lead to a constitutional crisis.

While Trump railed against the raids as "an attack on our country", Cohen offered a disputing account, telling CNN on Tuesday that Federal Bureau of Investigation agents were "professional, courteous [and] respectful".

Cohen has said he paid Daniels out of his own pocket shortly before the 2016 presidential election, but has not explained why.

Cohen "would be as damaging a witness against Donald Trump as any witness Mueller could secure.

And that includes Trump's children", he said.
