Russia Claims Syria Chemical Attack Staged by Foreign Agents

Lavrov No chemical attack in Syria

After condemning the air strike on Syria, Russia " s Foreign Ministry said Damascus has come under attack by the US, France and the United Kingdom at a time when Syria is returning to peaceful life, after battling a terrorist aggression for years.

U.S. statements that Damascus has denied entry to Eastern Ghouta for experts from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) are far from reality, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Saturday at an annual Assembly of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy.

Russian Federation has been a staunch ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad's government and has helped turn the tide of war in his favour since entering the conflict in September 2015.

Syria has been attacked just as it had a chance for peace, Russia's Foreign Ministry said earlier, hours after US, British and French forces pounded Damascus with air strikes in response to a suspected poison gas attack last week.

"First, the Syrian people was subjected to Arab Spring, then Islamic State [IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL], now to 'smart" American missiles.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has condemned the military action.

But the Russian Foreign Ministry rejected the claims, while Russia's Defense Ministry said that the White Helmets are not a reliable source as they are well-known for spreading false information.

Russian Federation and the United States are using their channels of communications on Syria, according to the minister.

The strike came about after Syrian forces cleared of terrorist groupings all of Eastern Ghouta, which had become stronghold of salafist militants with the backing of Washington, London and Paris. "Again, we are being threatened".

The Russian Foreign Ministry also claimed that following Syrian rebels' withdrawal from the eastern Ghouta suburbs of Damascus, stockpiles of chemical agents were allegedly found there. They are due to arrive in Syria Saturday to investigate.

"Not one of the cruise missiles released by the USA and its allies entered the zone of responsibility of Russian air defences protecting facilities in Tartus and Hmeimim", the ministry said in a statement carried by the RIA Novosti state news agency, referring to the locations of Russia's naval and air bases.
