Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday thanked the "thousands of men and women", who gathered at midnight march, held to protest the brutal gangrape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathu and the gangrape of a teenager in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao.

Amid national outrage and possible cracks in BJP-PDP ties in Jammu and Kashmir over the Kathua rape incident, the Centre went into damage control on Friday evening, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi declaring "no culprits will be spared, complete justice will be done". "We are very thankful to the prime minister that he has spoken at least, even if he spoke after three months of Kathua and after weeks of Unnao and even if he has spoken at the beck and call of opposition parties like us".

Talking about the objective of the march, Rahul Gandhi said, "We are here against crimes being committed against women, against rapes, violence and murder and the government must act on this".

Rahul Gandhi joined the protest around midnight. His sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and her husband Robert Vadra were also present. Find us on Facebook too!

Azad said the Modi government was sleeping and those facing the biggest threat were the daughters of the country during the current regime. Celebrities broke their silence on the matter and have come out strongly against the rape and murder of the 8-year-old child in Kathua. Talking about both the victims in a press release, Modi said, "Our daughters will definitely get justice". Ashok Gehlot, in-charge of the organisation said Congress units in every State will be holding candlelight vigils to highlight crimes against women. The government should ensure that the women of India feel safe. The incident came to light when she attempted to immolate herself outside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanth's residence in Lucknow.

On January 17, the body of a minor girl was found in the forests near Rasana, Hiranagar. Just before her head was bashed in with a rock, one of the police officers asked the killer to wait so he could rape the child one more time, according to the police charge-sheet submitted in court. A total of 8 people have been arrested in connection with the Kathua case, including policemen who reportedly covered up the incident.
